WESTCHESTER COUNTY 9/11 MEMORIAL WINS AWARD
American Institute of Architects cites Frederic Schwartz for The Rising design

Frederic Schwartz (on right), architect of Westchester's 9-11 Memorial, and The Rising project Architect, Jessica Jamroz, receive award from Adolf Orlando, president of the Westchester Mid-Hudson Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the memorial's design.

The construction of Westchester’s September 11th Memorial, The Rising, is just getting underway but the structure is already being recognized for its architectural excellence.

Frederic Schwartz, the internationally accomplished architect of the memorial, has won a citation award from the Westchester/Mid-Hudson chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for his design of The Rising.

Schwartz accepted his award on November 3, at the AIA Annual Awards Program, which was held this year at Pace University.
County Executive Andy Spano said, “The Rising will be a soaring structure that stands as permanent tribute to the residents of our county who died in the tragedies of 9/11. It is a remarkable work of art and the creation of a brilliant architect -- I congratulate Fred and his staff for this tremendous accomplishment.”

The Rising is one of 10 designs cited by the AIA from a field of 49 award submissions. It was the only design recognized in the “unbuilt” category.
Schwartz’s design for Westchester’s memorial was selected by a committee comprised of some of the families who lost their loved ones on 9/11, as well as professionals in the field of public art. His proposal was one of 37 submissions received from artists and architects from all over the world.

“The September 11 Memorial project was very personal for Fred,” Spano said. “As a resident and business owner in lower Manhattan, he was deeply affected by the tragedies. We are grateful for the countless hours that Fred donated to this project and for sharing his concept and dream for this memorial.”
